Snow still on the ground here. Trying to find some time and energy to move forward on three projects I’ve been stuck on for a minute. Found a little inspiration in Jessica Abel’s Autonomous Creative podcast from a couple days ago. The whole thing had some good ideas about how to approach creative work to avoid getting stuck. A particular passage resonated with me (and made me me chuckle having just read “Deep Work”, by Cal Newport):
“My tip for you is to set the bar low. You don’t have to do any of this perfectly…All of those things that stand in your way: small children, burnout, ADHD, full time job, too young, too old. Those are all real. They’re all actual obstacles. But they do not rule you out!
You won’t suddenly wake up one morning at 5am, start taking an ice bath, slamming a bullet proof coffee, doing cross-fit, and meditating before diving into three hours of deep work. That’s not how it works. The key to making it all work is not waiting for the perfect time-not waiting to be ready – because there will never be the time that is the perfect time. You have to take imperfect action.”
“Imperfect Action“. Perhaps not a new idea. It’s something I’ve always sort of known and even lived by. But it’s good to be reminded from time to time. I think I will meditate on it during my ice bath tomorrow morning.
