I had planned a longer post to cover some of the things I did this week, but that will wait. For now, I want to say farewell to my old dog, Pebbles.
We got her back in 2009 when the kids were in 1st and 4th grade. I’ve never had a dog like her. Before Pebbles, all our dogs were lovable, friendly goofballs. But not Miss P. even as a puppy, she was wound a little too tight—barked at everything and everyone, a bit fearful of people, grumpy, and anxious. Quite frankly, she might be described as ‘a vicious little dog’ who actually bit a few of my friends and family when they visited (nipped really, minimal bleeding). She kept door-to-door salespeople at bay and herded visitors into corners of the house in various stages of terror. On walks, I had to warn many (many, many) people not to come up and pet her because, ‘She bites.’
On Thursday morning, while I was out of town, Danette found her on the floor, unable to get up. She and Marcus tried to help her stand, but she couldn’t. They took her to the vet, where an ultrasound revealed a tumor in her stomach that had burst, causing internal bleeding. There was nothing that could be done, so they let her pass peacefully.
And so it goes.
I’m sorry I wasn’t there to say goodbye, old girl. But I know you loved us, and we loved you right back. We will miss you very much.
😢 being nipped at by her presented a challenge to me to befriend her. I was successful (maybe just wore her down) as she was accepting me for the last few years. Loyal family member and buddy to Rocky.
